American researchers reported today that teenagers who sleep less than eight hours on weeknights tend to consume more fatty foods and snacks compared to those who sleep more than eight hours.

The researchers noted that insufficient sleep can lead to chronic dietary changes, increasing the risk of obesity, particularly among teenage girls.

Previous studies have linked inadequate sleep to weight gain, but this new research identifies where the extra calories come from.

Dr. Susan Redline, the study's lead author, and her colleagues surveyed 240 teenagers aged 16 to 19 who participated in a sleep study. They used a wristwatch-like device to monitor the teens' sleep and conducted professional interviews to assess their food intake.

The study found that teenagers who slept less than eight hours on weeknights consumed 2.2% more calories from fat and 3% fewer calories from carbohydrates than those who slept eight hours or more.

In a statement, Redline said, "A relative increase of 2.2% in daily fat intake among those who sleep less could lead to cumulative excess calorie consumption over time, raising the risk of obesity and cardiovascular disease." (Central News Agency)
