According to a recent U.S. study on faith and health, researchers found that individuals who previously had religious beliefs but later abandoned them are more likely to experience a decline in health. This may be related to a lack of peer support and the disruption of healthy routines.
Researchers at Pennsylvania State University analyzed data from 423 individuals who regularly participated in religious activities between 1972 and 2006. Among them, they further examined the health conditions of 96 individuals who had changed their original religious beliefs and 54 who had ceased their religious activities. The results showed that 40% of those who never changed their religious beliefs rated their health as excellent, while only 25% of those who had changed their beliefs did so.
Regarding this difference, researcher Stutzer explained, "Maintaining a positive mindset within a faith community, combined with the potential stress of leaving that faith, may reduce the likelihood of sustaining previously healthy habits."
The researchers also noted that after leaving their original faith, individuals may worry about losing friends or gradually revert to habits like drinking or smoking, which can negatively impact health. Additionally, belonging to a religious group often provides positive social support.
However, the researchers added that the relationship between abandoning faith and health still requires further study. Therefore, it cannot be simply concluded that abandoning faith directly affects health.
The survey sample was drawn from the U.S. "National Social Survey," involving a total of 30,523 individuals. The findings were published in the latest issue of the *Journal of Health and Social Behavior*.
