International Center/Comprehensive Report

According to a review in an Australian dental journal, mouthwash commonly used to prevent oral diseases may increase the risk of oral cancer. The report indicates that the alcohol in mouthwash can facilitate the penetration of cancer-causing substances into the oral cavity, and acetaldehyde, a carcinogenic component in alcohol, may accumulate in the mouth during the rinsing process.

Dental experts are urging the Australian Dental Association to reassess the certification given to alcohol-containing mouthwashes. Research shows that smoking and drinking are the main causes of oral cancer, but the general public often overlooks the alcohol content in mouthwash. Medical experts recommend using mouthwash for short-term medical purposes or developing alcohol-free alternatives.

Regarding this study, Brazilian medical professionals have also published similar findings. Researchers stated that the contact between mouthwash and oral mucosa is no different from drinking alcohol, "thus potentially causing chemical damage to cells." Scholars will conduct more precise research and verification.
