Diabetic patients worry daily about their blood sugar levels.
However, a U.S. study found that strictly controlling blood sugar every day could actually increase mortality rates, completely overturning decades of diabetes treatment methods. This research has been urgently halted, and Taiwan's medical community remains skeptical.
Daily insulin injections, avoiding sweets, and monitoring blood sugar levels are routines diabetic patients dare not neglect. Yet, the U.S. study discovered that strict blood sugar control may raise mortality rates.
How to manage blood sugar remains under observation by Taiwan's medical community. The U.S. study focused on patients around 62 years old, administering insulin 4 to 5 times a day and testing blood sugar 7 to 8 times. Surprisingly, this strict regimen resulted in 54 more deaths compared to other control groups.
The unexpected findings raise questions about other influencing factors. The U.S. has suspended the study, but for now, diabetic patients must still remain vigilant in controlling their blood sugar.
