In September, the Kaohsiung Health Bureau conducted random inspections of breakfast ingredients. The results revealed that nine porridge and side dish shops had pickled foods with excessive preservatives, with a specific type of sweetened bean product exceeding the limit by four times. When visiting the named chain store, "96 Porridge and Side Dishes," it was found that their sesame oil-pickled cucumber was also on the list of超标 products. Surprisingly, the shop was still selling it, claiming they had not been notified. They quickly removed it from shelves after learning about the issue, leaving customers shocked and vowing not to purchase non-compliant products again.
The tables were filled with steaming bowls of porridge and various side dishes, including pickled ingredients, as customers enjoyed their breakfast. However, at this well-known chain store on Zili Road in Kaohsiung, the sesame oil-pickled cucumber on display was found to contain excessive preservatives, alarming customers.
A customer said, "If the inspection shows it’s不合格, who would dare eat this? The preservatives exceed the limit by four times—of course, it’s no longer safe to consume!"
A supplier admitted, "We weren’t very clear about the preservative levels before, but after being fined, we now have a better idea of how much should be used."
The shop quickly closed its shutters after discovering the issue. In September, the Health Bureau inspected 60 ingredients, including sesame oil-pickled cucumber,脆筍, and gluten, from breakfast shops, "96 Porridge and Side Dishes," and other similar stores in Kaohsiung. The results showed that nine shops had a total of 10 products containing excessive benzoic acid preservatives, with a failure rate of 16%. Notably, the sweetened bean product exceeded the limit by four times.
The suppliers involved were Xinchang Food Company in Kaohsiung, Hongchang Hao in Pingtung, and Ganlong Agricultural Product Processing Factory in Nantou. Wei Rentin, head of the Food Hygiene Section at the Kaohsiung Health Bureau, stated, "We have already instructed the affected breakfast shops to immediately remove these products from shelves."
A staff member from "96 Porridge and Side Dishes" responded, "How would I know it failed the test? They only informed you, not me."
Despite being flagged for超标, the sesame oil-pickled cucumber was still being sold in the shop, leaving the staff stunned before hastily removing it. The Health Bureau will fine the manufacturers between NT$30,000 and NT$150,000 according to the law. Consumers are advised to limit their intake of pickled ingredients to avoid consuming excessive preservatives with their food.Source:
