Drinking soy milk and eating tofu—soybean-based foods are rich in protein and nutritious. However, some of these products are made from genetically modified soybeans. Studies have shown that lab rats fed genetically modified soybean products experienced stunted growth, smaller reproductive organs, and even infertility. Although there is no direct evidence proving harm to humans, the public is advised to minimize risks by consuming less. The Homemakers United Foundation also found that 60% of soybean and corn products on the market do not indicate whether they are genetically modified, leaving consumers uncertain.
Reporter Wang Qianru: "Many people drink soy milk for breakfast, but the soybeans used to make the soy milk could very well be genetically modified."
Through biotechnology, genetically modified soybeans are bred to increase yield. Taiwan imports 3 million tons annually, which are processed into products like soy milk and tofu. However, research has shown that rats fed genetically modified soybean products exhibited stunted growth and smaller reproductive organs.
Dr. Su Yining, Medical Doctor: "Some rats, after multiple generations of consuming genetically modified foods, have shown evidence of infertility and even endocrine disruption. As for humans, the effects remain inconclusive."
To avoid risks, the only way to distinguish is by checking labels. Soybean products should indicate whether they contain genetically modified ingredients. However, beyond soybeans, many snacks like crackers are made from corn, which may also be genetically modified. The Homemakers United Foundation's survey found that 60% of 108 corn-based food products on the market lacked proper labeling. While there is no direct proof that genetically modified foods harm humans, the lack of government restrictions and unclear labeling leaves consumers in a dilemma.
