Drinking soda like water can truly rot your guts! A 24-year-old young woman, who usually avoids plain water, recently drank icy carbonated beverages daily to quench thirst and beat the heat due to scorching weather. At her peak, she downed five bottles of cola—nearly 1,800cc—in a single day. One night, she suddenly felt chest tightness and a burning sensation, waking up in excruciating pain with uncontrollable vomiting. A hospital examination revealed severe gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), leading to esophageal ulcers and scarring.
It turns out this young woman, due to her love for carbonated drinks, irregular meals, and spicy food, had already been diagnosed with GERD two years prior. After treatment and lifestyle adjustments, her condition improved. However, this recent relapse was far worse—all because of her excessive consumption of cola and other carbonated beverages.
Dr. Wu Deqiang, a gastroenterologist at Taipei Zhongshan Hospital, explained that cola is the most stomach-damaging beverage as it irritates the mucous membrane. Unfortunately, this woman couldn’t stop once she started, sometimes drinking up to five cans (nearly 1,800cc) a day. Not only did she constantly experience acid reflux with a foul taste in her mouth, but she also suffered frequent chest tightness, pain, and a burning sensation. Due to chronic and recurrent GERD, an endoscopy revealed severe esophageal inflammation, ulceration, and scarring.
Amid the sweltering summer, recent clinic visits for GERD triggered by excessive carbonated drink consumption have surged by 20%. Clinically, many patients suffer from GERD due to long-term consumption of alcohol, tea, coffee, chocolate, or other irritants, or from wearing tight jeans or shapewear. Many eventually seek medical help due to unbearable pain.
