Be cautious when purchasing melamine containers! The Consumer Protection Committee of the Executive Yuan announced on the 19th the results of a spot check on 30 melamine containers sold in the market. It was found that 5 items released formaldehyde, 1 item exceeded the standard for melamine release, and 28 items violated product labeling regulations. Only 2 products met both labeling and quality requirements: the "Melamine Soup Bowl" imported by Daiso and the "Hello Kitty Eco-Friendly Double-Handled Soup Cup" by Dunjing Enterprise.
The "CY-6023 Two-Tone Business Bowl" by Yuanjun Industrial, the "Melamine Bowl Shan Yu Li 309" by Yihui Hardware Utensils, the "Melamine Tableware Cup" and "Melamine Tableware Bowl" by Jinshun Dai Enterprise Co., Ltd., and the "Melamine Water Cup" distributed by Taiwan Guangzhan Company (agent for Zhongshan Guangzhan Company) were found to release formaldehyde. Meanwhile, the "Melamine Tableware (Pink Bowl)" by Jinshun Dai Enterprise Co., Ltd. released 3.0ppm of melamine.
In August of this year, the Consumer Protection Committee conducted spot checks on 30 melamine containers in five counties and cities, including New Taipei City, Taichung City, Miaoli County, Pingtung County, and Hualien County. The results showed that 5 items released formaldehyde when filled with 95°C hot water, and 1 item released 3.0ppm of melamine. Consumer Protection Officer Wang Deming stated that, according to national standards, melamine containers must not release formaldehyde, and the release of melamine must not exceed 2.5ppm. He reminded the public not to use these containers for microwaving or steaming, and to avoid storing extremely hot items whenever possible.
Zheng Weizhi, Section Chief of the Food Division at the Department of Health, noted that all non-compliant products originated from mainland China. Authorities have already required businesses to recall and destroy these items. Failure to comply may result in fines ranging from NT$30,000 to NT$150,000. He advised consumers to replace products immediately if they show signs of damage or scratches and to avoid vigorous scrubbing with abrasive sponges during cleaning, as this could lead to the release of melamine, formaldehyde, or heavy metals, which may then enter the body through food.
