The Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, announced today that neuroscientists have successfully made experimental subjects perceive another person's body as their own.

The institute stated in a declaration: "In one of the experiments, the subjects exchanged bodies with others and shook hands with themselves without breaking the illusion."

Henrik Ehrsson, who led the research project, said: "This experiment shows how easy it is to change the brain's perception of one's own body."

He said: "By manipulating perceptual impressions, one can not only deceive oneself into leaving the body but also enter someone else's body."

In one experiment, a mannequin's head was equipped with two cameras connected to two small screens in front of the subject's eyes, allowing them to see what the dummy 'saw'.

The institute explained: "When the dummy's camera eyes and the subject's head looked down, although normally the subject would see his or her own body, this time they saw the dummy's body."

When a scientist touched both the real and the dummy's stomachs with two sticks, it created the illusion of body swapping. The subject then saw the dummy's stomach being touched and also felt, without seeing, that his or her own stomach had the same sensation.

The institute said: "Thus, the subject developed a strong sense that the dummy's body was their own body."
