Researchers presented a surprising study yesterday indicating that mothers can inadvertently pass on their experiences to their offspring. In the study, young mice were able to inherit "education" that their mothers had received before pregnancy.

The researchers, writing in "The Journal of Neuroscience," noted that the study suggests that the truth about heredity may go far beyond traditional genetic theories.

They found that young mice raised in an enriched environment with toys and other stimuli could pass on what they had learned to the next generation when they became adults.

The study pointed out that mother mice raised in a stimulating environment were not just better at nurturing their young. Even if the young mice were switched at birth, as long as their biological mother, rather than their foster mother, had grown up in an environment with more toys, their learning outcomes were still better.
