Reporter Jian Guoshu / Lukang Report
Mr. Huang from Lukang Town suffered a gout attack three days ago and took an excessive amount of painkillers, which led to acute nephritis. He sought medical treatment, and after receiving IV fluids and medication, his kidney function levels returned to normal. The doctor stated yesterday that fortunately, he received timely treatment; otherwise, he might have required lifelong dialysis.
Dr. Li Wenqin, a nephrologist at Lukang Xiou Clinic, said that the 28-year-old Mr. Huang visited the emergency room due to general discomfort. Blood tests revealed elevated creatinine levels, indicating impaired kidney function and bringing him to the brink of dialysis. Mr. Huang explained that he had taken non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and colchicine to relieve his gout pain, consuming five packets at once, which later caused continuous diarrhea.
Dr. Li Wenqin noted that diarrhea is a side effect of colchicine, while NSAIDs not only harm the stomach but also have some degree of nephrotoxicity. Patients with kidney disease should avoid them as much as possible. Mr. Huang’s intake of five times the normal dose led to severe dehydration and acute kidney failure. Fortunately, prompt treatment prevented the need for lifelong dialysis.
Dr. Li Wenqin emphasized that patients should carefully discuss medication indications and side effects with their doctors and avoid adjusting dosages on their own. Otherwise, they risk harming their health instead of curing their condition.
