"From the perspective of women's groups, I do not believe that taking birth control pills is the best method of contraception," said Cai Wanfen, Secretary-General of the Taiwan Women's Link. She pointed out that if long-term use of low-dose hormonal contraceptives leads to health concerns, women should opt for condoms instead of birth control pills.
Cai Wanfen stated that, undeniably, many women have long suffered from premenstrual syndrome. However, she believes that women should view their menstrual cycle from a positive perspective, as the presence or absence of menstruation represents certain health signals. Women should take this opportunity to assess their health status rather than using birth control pills to completely eliminate menstruation.
Cai Wanfen also emphasized that the number of HIV cases transmitted through heterosexual contact is increasing in Taiwan, and women are often infected by their partners without their knowledge. Therefore, from the standpoint of preventing sexually transmitted diseases and contraception, she encourages women to choose condoms over birth control pills, especially since long-term use of birth control pills still raises many health concerns.
It is worth noting that many men often mock women's emotional fluctuations during their menstrual period by referring to it as "Aunt Flo is visiting." In response, Cai Wanfen stated that both men and women hold some misconceptions, even prejudices and stigmas, about menstruation. However, she believes that research shows that menstruation, whether before, during, or after, does not necessarily affect women's emotions. Therefore, she calls for a correct understanding of menstruation across all sectors of society, eliminating the association of menstruation with impurity, so that women will not desire to extend their menstrual cycles to quarterly periods.
