Reporter Yu Bolin / Taichung Report

Recently, with large temperature fluctuations, an 80-year-old woman in Taichung County sought medical treatment for a cold and fever but still felt unwell. After purchasing and taking fever-reducing medication on her own, she experienced symptoms such as full-body tremors, which only subsided after receiving an IV drip.

Wang Ruiqin, Director of the Department of Chest Medicine at Dali Jen-Ai Hospital in Taichung County, said that fever is a warning sign and the underlying cause should be identified. He cautioned against indiscriminate use of medication to "reduce fever."

Dali Jen-Ai Hospital reported that an 85-year-old woman surnamed Chen, feeling that her cold treatment was "not enough," bought fever-reducing medication from a pharmacy to "speed up" recovery. Unexpectedly, this led to the opposite effect—her breathing and heart rate accelerated, and her body trembled uncontrollably. After her family rushed her to the hospital, doctors suspected that taking multiple medications in a short period had triggered adverse "cross-effects."

Wang Ruiqin explained that fever is a symptom and a warning sign, indicating an infection in a part of the body. Simply focusing on "reducing fever" only addresses the symptom temporarily. The root cause should be treated, as indiscriminate use of fever-reducing medication may backfire. Fever is often accompanied by symptoms such as "chills," "shivering," general fatigue, or sweating, and medical attention should be sought promptly to determine the cause.

Tu Shijun, Director of the Department of Family Medicine at Dali Jen-Ai Hospital, advised that when experiencing chills, one should stay moderately warm or use an ice pillow, rest more, ensure proper ventilation, and adopt a diet of small, frequent meals with easily digestible foods.

Wang Ruiqin reminded the public not to purchase and take fever-reducing medication without professional guidance, as there are many types of such drugs, and improper use could lead to severe side effects and prolong the illness.
