Taking erectile dysfunction drugs like Viagra may potentially cause hearing damage? A recent international study found that among men who take Viagra or similar medications, one in three experiences hearing loss—double the rate of those who don’t take such drugs. However, domestic doctors suggest that this could also be because men who take these drugs often belong to high-risk groups for conditions like hypertension and diabetes. It remains difficult to determine whether the hearing loss is due to high blood pressure or the use of Viagra. Nevertheless, those taking nitroglycerin or blood pressure-lowering medications are advised against combining them with erectile dysfunction drugs.
Dr. Cai Peibin from the Shu Tian Urology Clinic: "This is Levitra, this is Viagra."
The little blue pill or the little orange pill—some rely on these drugs to regain their "sexual happiness." However, the latest research suggests that men with hearing loss should avoid them.
A study by the University of Alabama involving 11,525 men aged 40 and above found that among those who took Viagra, one in three experienced hearing loss. When consulting domestic doctors for verification, it was noted that the cause of hearing impairment might also be linked to the fact that many users of these drugs belong to high-risk groups for conditions like hypertension.
Cai Peibin: "Hypertension, diabetes, or other neurological conditions can cause hearing impairment. It’s quite difficult to immediately determine whether it’s due to these conditions or the use of Viagra."
A look at Viagra’s drug information leaflet reveals a long list of side effects. Under the "special organs" section, there is indeed a small warning mentioning symptoms like tinnitus and deafness. However, the most commonly reported side effects of Viagra are headaches and facial flushing.
Cai Peibin: "Facial flushing or a feeling of facial swelling usually indicates the drug is working, so it’s often taken as a sign of effectiveness."
Nevertheless, doctors caution that there are contraindications for taking erectile dysfunction drugs—they should not be combined with nitrates, nitroglycerin, or blood pressure-lowering medications. In short, men should only take these drugs under a doctor’s approval to ensure safety.
