Dextromethorphan is a medication used to treat coughs and can effectively reduce the usage of morphine and methadone. Professor Lu Rubin from National Cheng Kung University Hospital reminds patients that the dosage of dextromethorphan must be determined by a professional doctor after evaluation. Patients should not casually purchase cough syrup from pharmacies, as it can easily lead to addiction, and excessive consumption may cause poisoning.

Professor Lu Rubin mentioned that opium, heroin, morphine, and similar substances were originally the best analgesics for treating severe and chronic pain. However, long-term use can lead to increasing dosage and addiction.

Lu Rubin pointed out that effective medications for severe and chronic pain are still lacking worldwide. As a result, long-acting opioids such as methadone, which only need to be taken once a day, have been adopted to replace short-acting opioids like heroin, which require frequent dosing. Nevertheless, these drugs still carry risks of addiction and harm to the body.

The medical team at National Cheng Kung University has discovered that using some new treatment medications and methods, such as low-dose dextromethorphan (also known as dextrorphan), can effectively reduce the usage of morphine and methadone while also mitigating their toxicity to the human brain and body.

For decades, dextromethorphan has been used as a cough suppressant. However, in recent years, research teams have uncovered new mechanisms of action, and these findings have been submitted for a U.S. national patent. Lu Rubin particularly warns patients that the dosage of dextromethorphan must be determined by a professional doctor after evaluation. Patients should not casually purchase cough syrup from pharmacies, as doing so can easily lead to addiction, and excessive consumption may cause poisoning.
