People experiencing sudden abnormal hair loss, changes in hair color, or alterations in hair texture should take note, as these issues may be linked to medications they are taking.

According to a report from the University of Melbourne, medications for blood pressure, acne, or antidepressants could potentially cause hair loss or changes in hair quality.

These hair changes may occur after taking the medication and can persist for up to a year. Fortunately, in most cases, these changes are temporary and reversible—meaning the hair may return to its original state.

Medications that may cause hair-related issues include: anti-epileptic drugs, antidepressants, psoriasis medications, birth control pills, beta blockers, acne medications (such as isotretinoin), the painkiller ibuprofen, and anticoagulants used to prevent blood vessel blockages.

Doctors advise that if you notice abnormal hair loss, you should not stop taking your medication on your own. Instead, consult a medical professional to determine whether switching to another medication or adjusting the dosage is appropriate. Most of these effects are not permanent.
