The traditional Chinese medicine "Babao San" was a folk remedy favored by the older generation for babies, believed to detoxify the fetus, remove tongue coating, and regulate the stomach and intestines. A woman in Taipei sprinkled Babao San in the mouth of her two-month-old granddaughter to remove tongue coating, unexpectedly causing acute hepatitis. Doctors stated that borneol contains camphor, which is highly toxic. Fortunately, the infant was rushed to the hospital in time, saving her life. Although Babao San nearly caused fulminant hepatitis in the infant, traditional Chinese medicine practitioners believe this is likely a rare case. It is advised that any symptoms in children should be diagnosed by a doctor, as relying on folk remedies may not only worsen the condition but also lead to more problems.
