The advent of the contraceptive pill has given women control over their fertility, but now British research suggests that the pill may also bear some responsibility for the breakdown of marital relationships, as it can alter women's preferences in men, potentially leading them to "fall for the wrong person."
Body odor plays a significant role in human mate selection. However, research from the University of Liverpool indicates that the contraceptive pill can interfere with a woman's ability to "sniff out" men with complementary genes, causing them to be attracted to men they would not normally be interested in.
Previous studies have found that women tend to prefer the body odor of men whose "Major Histocompatibility Complex" (MHC) genes differ from their own. However, this phenomenon was not observed in women using the contraceptive pill.
The latest study, published in the journal of the Royal Society, evaluated changes in the preferences of 97 women before and after taking the contraceptive pill. The participants were divided into two groups: one group took the pill, while the other served as a control. Researchers tested their MHC genes and then had each woman smell six different male body odors before and after taking the pill—three from men with MHC genes different from their own and three similar. The body odor samples were collected from men's pajamas worn for two consecutive nights.
Dr. Roberts, a lecturer in evolutionary psychology at the University of Liverpool and the lead researcher, said, "The results show that women taking the contraceptive pill shift their preference towards male body odors that are genetically similar to their own."
This further supports the idea that the hormones in the contraceptive pill can influence women's perception of male attractiveness. This not only increases the risks of fertility issues and miscarriage, threatening human evolution, but may also jeopardize relationships, as women may suddenly find their partners less attractive once they stop or start taking the pill.
