The latest research published in the "Journal of Neuroscience" indicates that hormone therapy, commonly received by menopausal women, may accelerate brain atrophy.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging Shows Shrinkage in Memory Areas

Previous studies have suggested that older women taking progesterone medications experience a decline in thinking and memory abilities, and are more likely to develop dementia or reduced brain function. Doctors have long believed that this brain damage is caused by vascular diseases in the brain induced by hormone therapy. The new study, using MRI scans of women's brains, found that the memory-related areas in the brains of women receiving hormone therapy appear to have shrunk.

A second study found that women undergoing hormone therapy had a slight reduction in the volume of the frontal lobe and hippocampus, areas crucial for memory and thinking.

However, domestic gynecologists believe that any research on hormones must consider the age of menopausal women. For instance, women aged 59 to 79 have a higher probability of developing neurological disorders such as dementia and Alzheimer's disease. If women in this age group receive hormone therapy and brain atrophy is detected, it cannot be directly attributed to the hormone therapy.

The study suggests that menopausal women using hormone therapy may negatively affect the brain structures that maintain normal memory functions, with more pronounced negative effects in women who already had memory issues before starting hormone therapy.

From the research findings, it appears that doctors should only use hormone therapy for menopausal symptoms when absolutely necessary, and the treatment duration should be as short as possible with the lowest possible dose.

Doctors: Consider the Therapeutic Effects, Do Not Abandon the Treatment Due to Potential Risks

Professor Li Qilong, Chairman of the Menopause Association of the Republic of China and a gynecologist at Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, pointed out that Taiwanese women mostly experience menopause between the ages of 45 and 55, and it is during this age group that female hormones are needed.

The medical community has found that women who start hormone therapy in the early years of menopause can help slow down bone loss and prevent fractures due to osteoporosis. Early hormone therapy does not necessarily affect thrombosis formation, and there is no significant increase in breast cancer incidence.

Li Qilong stated that the report from the Journal of Neuroscience did not mention the age of the study subjects. Although progesterone can cause inflammatory reactions and increase vascular inflammation such as phlebitis, hormone therapy is an established medication with known pros and cons. When considering the health benefits for users, one should not abandon the treatment due to potential risks.

Li Qilong pointed out that it is common in clinical practice for women to view hormones as dangerous and try other therapies on their own, which can lead to kidney damage and the need for dialysis.
