The Canadian Department of Health warned on the 21st that two drugs used to treat type 2 diabetes may cause macular edema in patients or exacerbate existing symptoms.

The Canadian Department of Health issued this notice after being informed by GlaxoSmithKline, the manufacturer of the type 2 diabetes drugs Avandia and Avandamet. GlaxoSmithKline stated that some patients taking these diabetes medications have experienced such eye symptoms.

Symptoms of macular edema include decreased vision, astigmatism, reduced color recognition, and decreased adaptability to changes in brightness. Additionally, some patients taking Avandia or Avandamet have experienced edema, swelling of the limbs, and weight gain. Some patients were taking only one of the drugs, while others were taking them in combination with other medications, with varying conditions.

GlaxoSmithKline stated that patients taking these medications do not need to stop immediately but should consult their doctors first, as increased blood sugar levels could lead to other issues. However, the company also advised doctors to consider each patient's condition when deciding whether to discontinue prescribing these drugs.

GlaxoSmithKline noted that in some cases, patients' vision improved or even recovered after stopping the use of Avandia or Avandamet. However, the company also specifically warned doctors to be particularly cautious when prescribing these drugs to patients who already have macular edema or diabetic retinopathy.
