What a township representative! Wang Guifen, a representative of Luzhu Township in Taoyuan, was dissatisfied because a female nurse followed protocol and explained that it was inappropriate to discuss a patient's condition over the phone, asking the representative to visit the hospital in person. This angered Wang Guifen, who later went to the hospital and slapped the nurse in the head nurse’s office. The nurse's cheek became red and swollen from the strike. Outraged former colleagues posted photos online and condemned the act, saying, "The great Luzhu Township representative—hitting people, hitting nurses. If you drive away the nurses, who will take care of your esteemed self in the future? If you drive away the nurses, you win, but the country loses."

"She has a fiery personality and a terrible temper!" A resident from Wang Guifen's community said her temper was unbearable. Two months ago, a child was playing in the courtyard and making noise, which angered Wang so much that she poured water from her fifth-floor apartment onto the child. The drenched child ran home crying to their grandmother, leaving neighbors shocked by her extreme behavior. Colleagues and civil servants who have interacted with Wang also said she often flaunts her status as a public representative, acting arrogantly, leaving others resentful but afraid to speak out.

Luzhu Township Representative Wang Guifen slapped a Chang Gung Memorial Hospital nurse. Wang turned herself in yesterday evening, and after police completed the interrogation, she was sent for prosecution this morning on suspicion of assault. Regarding online rumors that Wang, accompanied by four men allegedly in plainclothes resembling police officers, forcibly entered the ICU to gather evidence after the incident, Guishan Precinct Chief Liao Hengyu stated that interviews with night-shift medical staff revealed no such occurrence, and Wang’s father had not suffered any harm.

Police investigation found that after Wang struck the nurse the previous afternoon, she called the police early yesterday morning, claiming her father’s life was in danger. Two uniformed officers on patrol responded by visiting the hospital and confirmed that Wang’s father in the ICU faced no safety issues. Authorities are now investigating the motive behind this call.

An incident occurred at Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital where a public representative allegedly assaulted a nurse for refusing to explain a patient's condition over the phone. The news shocked Taiwan’s medical and nursing communities, with many healthcare workers expressing outrage, even saying they were "so angry they almost had a stroke." This incident reminded the author of a statement by the writer and emergency physician known as "Dr. Knife," who once said, "Perhaps in the near future, we will miss the days when there were still healthcare workers to hit." These words encapsulate the bitterness and helplessness felt by Taiwan’s medical professionals.

Recalling a shocking international case, when Kate Middleton, the wife of Britain’s Prince William, was hospitalized due to severe morning sickness during her pregnancy, two Australian radio DJs, in pursuit of a scoop, impersonated Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles in a call to the hospital to trick a nurse into disclosing Kate’s condition. The deceived nurse later took her own life out of shame and anger.

Patient privacy is a right that healthcare workers strive to protect. Most medical staff verify the identity of the inquirer before discussing a patient’s condition, which is why few would disclose medical details over the phone. In this particular incident, the intensive care unit (ICU) is a critical care area where cases are complex and sensitive. Even visitation and attire are strictly regulated to maintain treatment stability and sterility, making it impossible to provide detailed medical information over the phone.

As the saying goes, "Desperate times call for desperate measures." While we understand the anxiety of family members concerned about their loved ones, consider this: if someone impersonates a relative to inquire about a patient’s condition or provides false information, it could lead to misjudgment by medical staff and even harm the patient. Moreover, explaining medical conditions over the phone risks miscommunication, potentially causing misunderstandings among family members.

Lastly, ICU staff are extremely busy. If every family member called to inquire about a patient’s condition, it would further overwhelm already overworked healthcare workers, disrupting medical procedures and compromising patient safety. If a patient’s condition is critical or unstable, medical staff typically proactively contact the family.

The collapse of Taiwan’s healthcare system is undeniable. The exodus of medical professionals has already harmed public health rights. Now, with frequent hospital violence, not only are healthcare workers’ personal safety directly threatened, but the rights and protections of other patients are also indirectly compromised. It is hoped that authorities will genuinely address and improve the issue of hospital violence.

The incident involving township representative Wang Gui-fen slapping a nurse at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taoyuan's Linkou district continues to escalate, with Wang yet to make a public statement. Half an hour ago, illustrator Xie Li-sheng swiftly uploaded a drawing on his Facebook fan page "Xie Li-sheng's Novel Illustration Fan Page," depicting Wang Gui-fen's likeness. He stated, "Her slap shattered the hearts of all nursing staff..." and sarcastically remarked, "This person is dangerous, holds a party card, and bullies the weak while fearing the strong."
