A 7-year-old boy in Taichung died 40 days after receiving the H1N1 vaccine. The boy’s father is a doctor, his mother is a nurse, and his uncle and grandfather are also doctors—a family of medical professionals. Despite seeking help from top medical teams across the country, they couldn’t save the boy’s life. The boy’s father suspects his son died due to the H1N1 vaccine and plans to sue the Department of Health’s Centers for Disease Control (CDC) over what he calls a "flawed vaccine policy." However, the CDC clarified that the boy’s death was not directly related to the vaccine itself.

The elementary school teacher flipped through a picture book made by the boy, Liu, which depicted his family. The work never got to compete in a contest before Liu passed away. A nun at Liu’s school said, "After the teacher shared the picture book and talked about Liu’s story, some of the children became very emotional."

In the eyes of his teachers, Liu was a gifted artist. Even during his hospitalization, he created Christmas-themed artwork. What devastated his father was that after receiving the H1N1 vaccine, the boy began showing symptoms and eventually lost his life.

Over the 40 days following the vaccination, the family endured immense suffering. Dr. Liu comes from a well-known medical family in central Taiwan and placed great emphasis on his son’s health. On the 19th of last month, Dr. Liu noticed his son had a high fever and a full-body rash. He immediately sought treatment from dermatologists and pediatricians and reported the case to the epidemic prevention hotline.

As his son’s condition worsened, Dr. Liu held a video conference with pediatric infectious disease specialists from National Taiwan University Hospital and Chang Gung Memorial Hospital at the end of last month. On the 2nd of this month, he sought help from a leading pediatric immunology expert at China Medical University Hospital. Over those 40 days, Dr. Liu exhausted all his medical resources and connections but still couldn’t save his son. He questioned the vaccine policy, but how did the CDC respond?

A CDC official stated, "The viral vaccine is injected solely into the muscle and does not spread throughout the body. During today’s expert meeting, we strongly hoped the family would agree to an autopsy, as it could greatly help clarify the cause of death."

Dr. Liu, unable to accept this, decided to sue the Department of Health for what he called "a fatal policy error." Since Liu’s son was a U.S. citizen, Dr. Liu is considering seeking legal action through the American Institute in Taiwan with the help of U.S. lawyers for a cross-border lawsuit.
