A TCM practitioner surnamed Xie from a clinic in Zhongli City, Taoyuan County, was suspected of adding Western medicine to Chinese herbal prescriptions in an attempt to accelerate treatment effects for patients. Taoyuan prosecutors and police raided the clinic and seized prescribed medications containing Western drug components such as antipyretics and analgesics. The doctor denied any tampering and was released on NT$70,000 bail pending further investigation.
The 66-year-old Dr. Xie was reported by patients who claimed that his prescribed medicine produced unusually fast results compared to the gradual effects typically expected from traditional Chinese medicine. Suspecting foul play, a patient submitted the medication to the health bureau for testing, which revealed the presence of Western drug components like acetaminophen, known for its fever-reducing and pain-relieving properties.
Yesterday, Taoyuan prosecutors led a joint inspection with the Coast Guard Administration, Taoyuan Police Precinct, and the Taoyuan County Health Bureau, seizing suspicious Chinese herbal ingredients such as Achyranthes root, persimmon frost, and kudzu root for further testing to determine whether they contained Western drug components. Prosecutors stated that initial investigations have ruled out the involvement of upstream Chinese medicine suppliers.
