Reporter Shi Jingru / Taipei Report

Last month, National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH) was shocked by the news of two middle-aged doctors falling ill. One of them, neurologist Dr. Chen Zhiquan, died suddenly at home, with hospital staff speculating it might have been due to overwork. The other, neurosurgeon Dr. Zeng Shenghong, collapsed while working but was successfully resuscitated and has since recovered.

Hospital staff revealed that Dr. Chen Zhiquan, 41, was an expert in treating tuberous sclerosis and lived alone in Taipei. One day last month, he did not show up for work, and calls to his cellphone went unanswered. It was later discovered that he had passed away at home, leaving colleagues in shock. Some speculated that he might have suffered a fatal heart attack due to overwork.

Dr. Chen was highly respected for both his medical ethics and skills, and his sudden death deeply saddened his patients. Members of the Tuberous Sclerosis Association posted online tributes mourning his loss and expressing gratitude for his dedication.

Not long before Dr. Chen's sudden passing, 55-year-old NTUH neurosurgeon Dr. Zeng Shenghong also collapsed while working at the hospital. He was rushed to the intensive care unit and saved by the hospital's ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) team. He has since recovered, though hospital staff widely believe his collapse may have been caused by a heart condition.

NTUH Vice President He Hongneng emphasized that both doctors and the general public should always prioritize their health to prevent such unexpected incidents.
