On March 29, 2006, the Children's Museum in Richmond, Virginia, held a press conference for a campaign called "This Side Up" to prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). At the event, 17 babies were laid on their backs in a circle, urging parents to let their babies sleep on their backs to avoid SIDS. (Associated Press)

New research from Australia indicates that the risk of sudden death in infants who sleep on their stomachs increases significantly if they are swaddled too tightly, have a cold, sleep on soft padding, or are in a room with higher temperatures. Many experts already believe that sleeping on the stomach increases the risk of sudden infant death. This new Australian study attempts to identify the causes of this mysterious syndrome. The study, conducted by Ponsonby and colleagues at the University of Tasmania, focused on 80 infants who died suddenly and 333 healthy infants. Some of the findings from the study are as follows:
- Padding: If an infant sleeps on their stomach on soft padding (usually filled with natural fibers, including kapok, etc.), the risk of sudden death increases to nearly 20 times.
- Swaddling: If an infant sleeps on their stomach while swaddled in sheets or blankets, the risk of sudden death is 12 times higher than usual.
- Illness: If an infant sleeps on their stomach while suffering from a cold, fever, or other minor illnesses, the risk of sudden death increases to 10 times.
- Room temperature: If an infant sleeps on their stomach in a room with higher temperatures, the risk of sudden death increases to 5 times.
However, why these factors increase the risk of sudden death remains a mystery.
