Forgetting what you just did? Be careful—it might not just be forgetfulness but the onset of dementia. The Taiwan Dementia Association pointed out that there are currently 170,000 dementia patients in Taiwan, with one new case added every seven seconds, totaling approximately 10,000 new cases annually.

September is International Dementia Month. The Miaoli County Government held a dementia awareness event today, emphasizing the concept that prevention is more important than treatment. Dr. Qiu Mingzhang (attending physician in neurology at National Taiwan University Hospital and chairman of the Taiwan Dementia Association) noted that dementia primarily affects the elderly aged 65 and above. Apart from the most common degenerative disease, Alzheimer's, other factors such as stroke, head injuries, smoking, obesity, a diet high in the "three highs" (high blood pressure, high blood sugar, high cholesterol), and depression can also increase the risk of dementia.

Dr. Qiu Mingzhang explained that there is still a difference between forgetfulness in the elderly and dementia. If forgetfulness becomes increasingly severe and one cannot recall things they just did, it’s time to be cautious. He recommends seeking a neurological examination at a hospital. Currently, there are no medications that can reverse or halt the progression of dementia. The only approach is early detection of hidden cases and early treatment to slow the rate of degeneration.

Dr. Qiu Mingzhang pointed out that dementia can be prevented early through measures such as regular exercise, mental stimulation, active participation in social activities, and adopting a Mediterranean diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and fish while reducing meat intake to enhance brain-protective factors. The Miaoli County Government is also promoting community screening services to help people detect and treat the condition early. 990923
