What kind of harm can the electromagnetic waves from mobile phones cause to the human body? A neurologist in the U.S. says that mobile phones are like low-powered microwaves, so holding a phone too close to the ear while talking is essentially cooking the brain. Additionally, research shows that those who start using mobile phones from a young age have a 2.5 times higher chance of developing brain cancer later in life. This suggests that while mobile phone radiation may not kill instantly, prolonged use could lead to more severe damage.

Mobile phones, mobile phones, everywhere—everyone has one. But is your phone safe? Neurologist: "We can't say using mobile phones is safe."

In the U.S., the mobile phone market has grown rapidly over the past 15 years. In 1996, only 34 million Americans owned a mobile phone, but today, that number has soared to nearly 300 million.

In other words, hundreds of millions of people are holding potential time bombs in their hands, and the longer they use them, the greater the risk to their health. CNN Medical Correspondent Gupta: "Studies have found that those who use mobile phones for over 10 years have double the risk of developing gliomas."

How can using a mobile phone lead to brain tumors? Let’s demonstrate with an experiment. CNN Medical Correspondent Gupta: "This is a model simulating an adult male’s skull. Here’s my phone placed at the angle most people hold it while talking. Importantly, the foaming liquid inside represents the dynamic behavior of human brain tissue."

The "brain fluid," made from a mixture of salt, sugar, and water, begins to foam under electromagnetic interference. Doctors say the younger the user, the more extensive the foaming effect in the brain. Starting mobile phone use at a young age increases the risk of brain tumors by 2.5 times by the age of 40. Neurologist: "Their skulls are thinner, their scalps are thinner, so electromagnetic waves penetrate deeper into the brains of children or young adults."

It turns out that electromagnetic waves are quite similar to microwaves. Although mobile phones emit weaker radiation than microwaves, prolonged exposure can still cause harm. Neurologist: "This is essentially cooking the brain."

If you don’t want to "cook" your brain while using your phone, here’s what you can do. CNN Medical Correspondent Gupta: "Safety guidelines state that when using an iPhone, keep it at least 1.5 cm away from your body. For BlackBerry users, the recommended safe distance is 2.5 cm away from the body, including your head or when it’s in your pocket."

Mobile phones are harmful to health, but manufacturers won’t tell us that—because they want to sell more phones.
