Unexplained ear pain, itching, or persistent tinnitus should not be ignored! A woman surnamed Zhang experienced itching and tinnitus in her right ear for several months. She had visited a clinic, but medication provided no relief. Upon visiting an ENT specialist, the doctor discovered yellow-white flakes resembling earwax during the examination. Further inspection with an ear endoscope revealed 10 to 20 living, moving dust mites. After the doctor removed and cleaned the mites from her ear canal, the tinnitus disappeared.
**Do Not Attempt Self-Removal of Foreign Objects—Risk of Eardrum Damage**
Dr. Chen Shihong, an ENT specialist at Taipei City Hospital Zhongxing Branch, explained that the patient's tinnitus was caused by dust mites crawling on her eardrum, creating a buzzing sensation. While tinnitus has many complex causes, cases caused solely by dust mites are extremely rare, with fewer than three reported in Taiwan. He reminded the public not to ignore tinnitus and to seek professional ENT care to identify and treat the underlying cause.
Insects entering the ear canal are quite common. Dr. Chen warned against using cotton swabs or ear picks to remove them, as this may cause further damage. Instead, try using light to lure the insect out or drowning it with oil before seeking professional medical assistance.
**Various Ear Foreign Objects—3 Emergency Home Remedies**
Dr. Chen emphasized that if a foreign object enters the ear, never use cotton swabs, ear picks, or fingers to remove it, as this may push the object deeper. He provided the following emergency home remedies:
1) **Light Method** / Shine a flashlight into the affected ear. Insects are phototactic and will crawl toward the light source in the dark ear canal.
2) **Oil Drip Method** / If the insect does not emerge after 10 minutes of light exposure, drip oil (at room temperature, around 20°C) into the ear to drown it and prevent it from biting the ear canal or damaging the eardrum. Avoid using oil that is too cold or hot, as it may cause dizziness.
3) **Water Drainage Method** / If water enters the ear while swimming or washing hair, tilt the head and hop on one foot to let gravity drain the water.
Dr. Chen stressed that if there is abnormal ear discharge, itching, or pain, avoid self-removal attempts, as they may cause secondary damage to the eardrum. The best approach is to seek medical attention for professional diagnosis and treatment.
