[Associated Press, Washington, D.C., January 3] Over the past two decades, the doubling of asthma cases in developed countries has been attributed to the decrease in measles, tuberculosis, whooping cough, and other respiratory infectious diseases.
Researchers suggest that infectious diseases like whooping cough may train the immune system to be unresponsive to irritants such as pollen and dust mites. Without these infectious diseases, the body remains allergic to allergens, leading to asthma.
Researchers from Japan and the UK conducted this study on 867 children aged 12 and 13 in Wakayama, Japan. Japanese children receive tuberculosis vaccinations at birth, at six years old, and at twelve years old. The researchers found that children who had a strong reaction to the tuberculosis vaccine had about one-third the rate of asthma compared to those who had a mild reaction to the vaccine.
Additionally, the study found that asthmatic children who had a strong reaction to the tuberculosis vaccine were six to nine times more likely to see their asthma symptoms disappear before the age of twelve than those who had only a mild reaction.
These results support the hypothesis that the reduction in infectious diseases is the reason for the increase in asthma cases in developed countries over the past twenty years. Surprisingly, asthma is less common in highly polluted areas than in cleaner, more developed regions.
However, Dr. McAfee from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in the United States said that while the findings are intriguing, they still require further verification.

The vaccine market is an enormous one, with immense profits at stake. It is no easy task to persuade the relevant interest groups to let go. It would be considered a rare achievement if they did not go to great lengths to obstruct research and information that is unfavorable to them.
