High temperatures in summer can also cause strokes! The excessive temperature difference between outdoor and air-conditioned rooms has led to several cases of summer strokes recently, according to Zhu Nianfeng, a chief physician in the community medicine department at Tri-Service General Hospital. Patients aged 45 and above with conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease should be particularly vigilant, stay hydrated, and avoid embolic strokes.

Zhu Nianfeng pointed out that many elderly patients suffering from heatstroke have been admitted to the clinic recently. The primary cause is the significant temperature difference between outdoor and indoor environments, coupled with insufficient water intake, leading to thickened blood.

The main symptoms of such heatstroke include dizziness and elevated blood pressure. If not careful, it may trigger a stroke. Zhu Nianfeng mentioned that since the onset of the scorching summer, two to three cases of summer strokes have been treated, all of which were embolic strokes.

Zhu Nianfeng explained that sweating is common in summer, and blood pressure tends to be higher in the elderly. If the temperature difference between indoor and outdoor environments is too large, blood vessels are prone to constrict. Insufficient hydration can lead to dehydration, thickening the blood and increasing the risk of embolic strokes.

Summer strokes differ from winter strokes. The former primarily affects individuals aged 60 to 70 and is mostly embolic, while the latter can occur in middle-aged adults and is often hemorrhagic.

How to prevent summer strokes in the elderly? Zhu Nianfeng suggested that timely and adequate hydration is essential. Each intake should not exceed 300cc to avoid burdening the heart. It is best to drink 100cc of water at a time and replenish fluids multiple times. Additionally, to prevent excessive temperature differences, air conditioning should be set between 26°C and 28°C. Avoid making the indoor temperature too cool compared to the outdoors. If sleeping in an air-conditioned room, it is advisable to develop the habit of drinking water before and after sleep.

Furthermore, taking low-dose aspirin is also a good method to prevent summer strokes. Zhu Nianfeng stated that aspirin can effectively prevent embolic strokes. As long as it is taken as directed by a doctor, gastrointestinal side effects can be minimized.
