Drinking coconut water led to cardiac arrest! A 66-year-old woman with a history of diabetes in Chiayi City recently bought a bottle of coconut water to quench her thirst and cool down. However, after drinking it several times, she suddenly fainted at home and her heart stopped beating. She was rushed to the hospital and revived through CPR.

Dr. He Yonghe from Chiayi Hospital stated that the patient, who has diabetes, had her blood sugar spike to 1200mg/dl upon arrival at the hospital, which is ten times the normal level. Fortunately, due to timely emergency treatment, she has since been discharged safely. If she had arrived at the hospital any later, the coconut water intended to cool her down might have become a deadly poison.

The doctor emphasized that this incident occurred because the patient lacked proper knowledge about diabetes. Although coconut water may taste light and bland, it is actually a high-sugar beverage, similar to sugarcane juice or fruit juice, and can cause a rapid rise in blood sugar. Diabetic patients must be cautious.
