(Agence France-Presse, Washington, 10th) A study shows that inhaled steroids can help young children improve breathing problems, but cannot prevent the development of chronic asthma.

Steroids are often used to reduce airway swelling and prevent asthma attacks.

In 2004, 9 million children in the United States were diagnosed with asthma, of which 1.5 million were under the age of five.

Most asthma patients develop symptoms within three years after birth, and doctors and researchers have established a theory that children in a high-risk environment for the disease may prevent the formation of the condition if they receive inhaled steroid treatment at a young age.

This study, conducted by the "National Institutes of Health" and the "Childhood Asthma Research and Education Network" on 285 children aged two to three, indeed showed that steroids can to some extent alleviate coughing and the typical symptoms of asthma, such as airway swelling.

However, researchers found that steroids have almost no effect on chronic asthma .

Ms. Nabor, a researcher at the National Institutes of Health, said: "Asthma is a health issue that affects a large number of people. Although this study indicates that inhaled steroids cannot prevent chronic asthma, it provides clear evidence that this medication can also benefit some of the youngest patients."
