Official statistics show that one in every four adults in New York City, USA, is infected with the genital herpes virus. Additionally, the infection rate among African Americans is nearly fifty percent.
The infection rate of this type 2 herpes simplex virus in New Yorkers is twenty-six percent, making it the city with the highest prevalence of the disease in the United States. The national infection rate is nineteen percent, meaning approximately one in every five people is infected.
In this city, which has been glamorized by the hit TV series "Sex and the City" that even spawned a movie version, the infection rate among women is significantly higher than that among men, with rates of thirty-six percent versus nineteen percent.
This research report was released by the New York City Department of Health. The report also points out that the infection rate among African Americans is much higher than that among whites, at forty-nine percent compared to fourteen percent.
Most patients infected with the HSV-2 virus do not show symptoms, but some people may experience genital pain, which can take two to four weeks to recover from.
Dr. Schillinger, the Inspector General of the Bureau of Sexually Transmitted Disease Prevention and Control at the New York City Department of Health, said, "Genital herpes does not cause serious problems for most people."
"However, some people may experience genital pain, and in addition, infection with this disease can exacerbate the HIV epidemic."
She said, "Consistent use of condoms can help prevent the contraction or spread of genital herpes."
