Researchers today pointed out that early-stage Alzheimer's disease patients with good physical fitness have less shrinkage in the memory-related areas of the brain.

Dr. Sam Gandy, Chairman of the Medical and Scientific Advisory Committee of the Alzheimer's Association, said: "The message here is essentially that if you have Alzheimer's, it's not too late to start exercising and getting fit."

Researchers at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City studied the relationship between fitness and brain volume in 56 healthy adults and 60 early-stage Alzheimer's patients, all over the age of 60.

The results showed that early-stage patients with good physical fitness had larger brain volumes in memory-related areas compared to those who did not exercise. The report, presented at the Alzheimer's Association International Conference in Chicago, stated: "We were able to identify changes related to exercise and the actual memory area, the hippocampus, which is a key region of atrophy associated with Alzheimer's."
