Taking the stairs instead of the elevator at work could potentially save a life.

A small Swiss study released today shows that climbing stairs instead of taking the elevator for three months significantly improves physical fitness. In fact, the increased oxygen uptake capacity is equivalent to a 15% reduction in the risk of premature death from any cause.

Additionally, the study found significant reductions in waist circumference, body fat, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels, all of which are known risk factors for heart disease.

Philippe Meyer from the University Hospital in Geneva studied 69 individuals with a sedentary lifestyle, meaning they exercised less than two hours a week and climbed fewer than 10 flights of stairs daily.

After 12 weeks of switching from elevators to stairs, their daily stair climbing increased from an average of five flights to 23 flights, resulting in a significant improvement in physical fitness.
