A research report released today by the Alzheimer Society of Canada indicates that Alzheimer's disease is not limited to the elderly.

Alzheimer's disease, also known as senile dementia, primarily affects individuals aged 65 and above. However, the Alzheimer Society of Canada's research report shows that among the approximately 500,000 Alzheimer's patients in Canada, 14% are under the age of 65. The Alzheimer Society of Canada also warns that due to population aging, the number of Alzheimer's patients in Canada will double in the next 20 years.

Ray Congdon, a spokesperson for the Alzheimer Society of Canada, stated in a declaration that based on current conditions, the number of Canadians suffering from Alzheimer's and related dementias will double in the next 20 years.

The declaration points out that new data confirms that Alzheimer's and related dementias are gaining national attention. These conditions will place an overwhelming burden on the domestic healthcare system.

Scott Dudgeon, president of the Alzheimer Society of Canada, mentioned that the increasing number of baby boomers suffering from Alzheimer's and related dementias represents a significant loss for the business and industrial sectors. This is because the experience and knowledge of the baby boomer generation may not be passed on.

The Alzheimer Society of Canada's research report indicates that there are 70,000 Alzheimer's patients in Canada under the age of 65, with 50,000 of them being under 60 years old.

The report also notes that among Canadians over the age of 65, one in every 11 individuals suffers from Alzheimer's disease.
