TV advertisements portray clam essence as the "best liver-protecting supplement after social drinking." However, the Consumers' Foundation tested five clam essence products and seven clam tablets, finding that half of them contained 20% more sodium than labeled. Experts warn that Chinese diets are already high in sodium, and Japanese research shows excessive sodium intake can shorten lifespan by two to three years. Consumers who overlook this may face kidney problems first.
Recently, clam essence and clam tablet products have been heavily advertised on TV, claiming miraculous effects like boosting virility and improving cancer. The Consumers' Foundation sampled 12 such products from drugstores and online shops. While no preservatives or Western drugs were detected, and heavy metal levels were within limits, half were found to mislabel sodium content.
Consumers' Foundation Chairman Hsieh Tien-jen noted that the Department of Health allows a maximum 20% margin of error for sodium labeling. However, products like Health Code Golden Clam Essence, Cordyceps Ginseng Golden Clam Essence, Xiamu Premium Clam Tonic, Taiwan Sugar Clam Essence, Tungs' BioTech Turmeric Clam Tablets, and Centrum Clam Zinc Tablets exceeded this limit, clearly mislabeling. These products are sold at RT-Mart, PX Mart, Watsons, MOMO, and Eastern Home Shopping.
Yang Nai-yen, head of the foundation's food committee, emphasized that sodium-potassium balance is key to a healthy diet. Japanese studies found that those with high sodium intake lived two to three years shorter on average. (Source: China Times — Reporter Tang Chen-yu, Taipei)
