PFP legislators Zhong Shaohe and Zheng Jinling stated on the 5th that Taiwan Sugar Corporation, the largest domestic producer of Cordyceps sinensis, collaborated with the Food Industry Research Institute and health authorities to execute a large-scale biotech scam, selling counterfeit Cordyceps mycelium products, which has severely impacted public health. They demanded that Taiwan Sugar immediately halt sales and that the responsible authorities take full accountability.
Zhong Shaohe and Zheng Jinling previously held a press conference alleging that the domestic Cordyceps mycelium market is flooded with fake products. Today, they further revealed that the Food Industry Research Institute deliberately passed off Tolypocladium sinense as genuine Cordyceps sinensis. Taiwan Sugar used this fraudulent fungal certification to register the product as food. In reality, according to tests commissioned by Taiwan Sugar and conducted by Dr. Guo Yuqi on mycelium bioactivity and active ingredient identification, the so-called Cordyceps mycelium products from Taiwan Sugar showed no bioactivity matching natural Cordyceps. Zhong Shaohe asserted that Taiwan Sugar’s repeated claims of positive effects constitute an intentional deception of the public.
Zhong Shaohe noted that the Department of Health requires comprehensive safety tests for products, including acute, subacute toxicity tests, and teratogenicity tests. However, Taiwan Sugar only relied on a basic LD50 test conducted by Taipei Medical University in 1997, exaggerating the product’s safety and encouraging consumption without regard for public health.
Zhong Shaohe stated that the Food Industry Research and Development Institute has since removed Tolypocladium sinense from its catalog and ceased sales. However, health authorities have remained indifferent and evasive for over two months since the incident, showing no accountability and severely neglecting their duties. Taiwan Sugar sells hundreds of millions of NT dollars worth of fake Cordyceps mycelium products annually, significantly harming public health, and must immediately stop sales.
