The Hong Kong Department of Health recently announced that the Chinese patent medicine manufacturer "Li Chung Shing Tong (Group) Limited" produced Po Chai Pills containing potentially carcinogenic ingredients such as "phenolphthalein" and "sibutramine." The company has been ordered to recall two types of Po Chai Pills.
It is understood that "phenolphthalein" was once used to treat constipation but was banned as early as 2001 due to its potential carcinogenicity. "Sibutramine" is a Western drug that suppresses appetite, with side effects including possible increases in blood pressure and heart rate, mental abnormalities, and spasms. Some literature also links it to mental disorders, and it should not be taken by individuals with heart conditions.
A spokesperson for the Hong Kong Department of Health stated that the two types of pills ordered for recall are "Po Chai Pills (Portable Pack)" and "Po Chai Pills (10-Bottle Pack)."
