Yan Jun, a chief physician at Dongzhimen Hospital of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, stated that American ginseng is cool in nature and has excellent nourishing effects. However, it should not be consumed like chewing gum without restraint, as it can have adverse effects if not used appropriately.

In mainland China, it is popular to take American ginseng lozenges, especially among students preparing for college entrance exams. However, some students consume it irregularly, even treating it like chewing gum, carrying it around and consuming it without moderation.

The "Health Times" in Beijing cited Yan Jun, reporting that although American ginseng has excellent nourishing effects, it is not suitable for everyone, and its immune-boosting effects are not immediate. It takes time for the body to absorb and benefit from it.

Yan Jun said that if American ginseng is not used appropriately, it can have adverse effects. Traditional Chinese medicine considers American ginseng a cool herb, suitable for nourishing qi and yin. If one has symptoms of heat, such as dry mouth, irritability, hot palms, flushed face, or frequent fatigue, American ginseng can help regulate the body.

Conversely, if one has symptoms like phlegmy cough, excessive saliva, or edema, American ginseng should be avoided, as it may worsen the condition.

Additionally, "do not supplement if there is no deficiency." If the body is healthy and without discomfort, it is not advisable to frequently consume American ginseng lozenges.

Moreover, American ginseng is not suitable for damp conditions, and seasonal factors should be considered when consuming it. In mainland China, the dry climate in spring and summer makes it more suitable for American ginseng, while ginseng or red ginseng is more appropriate in autumn and winter.

Yan Jun said that compared to ginseng, American ginseng has a milder qi-nourishing effect and is less warming and drying. Therefore, there are no strict dosage requirements. Consuming four to six lozenges daily, equivalent to no more than five grams of raw herb, generally does not cause side effects.

When taking American ginseng, it is best not to consume it with strong tea or coffee, as this may reduce its efficacy. It is also important to drink plenty of water and avoid taking it with other medications. Those with cold and damp stomach conditions should also avoid it.
