Commonly used statin drugs for lowering cholesterol and blood lipids may have side effects far greater than previously recognized. The latest study conducted by the University of Nottingham in the UK has, for the first time, quantified the potential side effects of statins, finding that some users are indeed more prone to adverse effects such as abnormal liver function, acute kidney failure, cataracts, and muscle disorders.
The study analyzed users based on gender, race, and medical conditions, revealing that black male patients had an eight times higher likelihood of experiencing the aforementioned side effects compared to those not taking statins. For instance, male statin users were six times more likely to develop muscle disorders than non-users, while female users were three times more likely.
Despite the significant side effects, the University of Nottingham study emphasized that for most patients, statins remain a crucial medication for treating cardiovascular diseases and should not be dismissed due to potential adverse effects.
However, the research team urged healthy individuals not to take statins as a preventive measure against heart disease. Currently, around six million high-risk cardiovascular patients in the UK are prescribed statins.
The University of Nottingham study analyzed the medical records of over two million patients aged 30 to 84 in England and Wales from 2002 to 2008. The findings were published in the latest issue of the *British Medical Journal*.
