Dolphins are among the most beloved creatures in the ocean. Not only are they friendly toward humans, but they also possess remarkably high intelligence. Let's take a look at an intriguing experiment conducted by American scientists, where dolphins were observed interacting with mirrors.

This is an aquarium in Maryland, USA. Adults and children eager to watch dolphin performances filled the seats. Beyond jumping through hoops and playing with balls, dolphins are capable of much more. For instance, they enjoy looking at themselves in mirrors. Unaware that humans were secretly observing them from behind the mirror, these dolphins took turns admiring their reflections. Some spun in circles repeatedly, while others opened their mouths wide and stuck out their tongues—clearly, they loved gazing at themselves.

In an earlier experiment, scientists marked a dolphin's right fin before releasing it back into the water. Immediately, the dolphin swam to the mirror, intently examining what had been drawn on its fin.

Elephants exhibit similar behavior. When a cross was painted on an elephant's face, it too would carefully study its reflection to observe the mark. Most fascinatingly, scientists discovered that some dolphins, as young as six months old, could recognize their own reflections in the mirror. The younger the dolphin, the more likely it was to strike adorable poses in front of the mirror—much like human babies.

So, the next time you think a dolphin is smiling at you, don’t doubt it. These intelligent creatures are indeed capable of expressing emotions like joy, anger, sorrow, and happiness! (Comprehensive report by FTV News reporter Wang Hao)
