Renowned American psychologist Daryl Bem's latest research suggests that "it has now been confirmed that humans possess the ability to foresee the future" and can even influence the development of future events.
According to a report by the UK's Daily Mail, Bem, who works at Cornell University in New York, USA, has previously been a physicist and an amateur magician. Recently, he recruited over 1,000 participants and conducted nine different experiments, finding that eight of them supported the "future prediction theory."
First, the research team asked participants to memorize words on flashcards as much as possible, then randomly selected several cards and had them spell out the words. The results showed that the words chosen by the researchers were precisely those the participants had previously memorized. Bem believes this demonstrates that human memory can influence future events.
In another experiment, Bem showed participants images obscured on a computer screen and asked them to identify the erotic pictures. The participants' accuracy rate was remarkably high. Bem emphasized that "the probability of such experimental results being coincidental is only one in 74 billion," urging scientists to be more open to accepting such "parapsychological phenomena." However, the journal New Scientist, which published the research, cautiously noted that these findings still require further validation by more scientists.
