【Central News Agency / Portland Special Report】2011.11.02

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stated today that the number of deaths caused by prescription drug overdoses in the United States each year has surpassed the combined fatalities from heroin and cocaine.

The latest research report released by the CDC reveals that deaths related to prescription drugs such as Vicodin or OxyContin in the U.S. have more than tripled over the past decade.

According to statistics, there were approximately 4,000 deaths due to prescription painkillers in the U.S. in 1999. By 2008, this number had risen to 15,000 fatalities. On average, about 40 Americans die daily from prescription drug overdoses.

CDC Director Thomas Frieden told the media today, "The misuse of prescription drugs has now become as widespread as an epidemic in the U.S."

He also noted that most prescription drug-related deaths occur when individuals take medications prescribed for someone else—such as pills left in a cabinet or obtained from relatives or friends. Some cases are accidental, while others involve intentional misuse.

In the report, the CDC urged physicians to carefully evaluate patients' conditions and closely monitor them when prescribing painkillers. These medications should only be prescribed to patients whose pain cannot be managed by standard pain relievers.
