Whooping cough cases have been frequently reported across the United States, marking the most severe outbreak in 50 years. According to statistics, the cumulative number of cases nationwide this year has reached 18,000.
With the invention and administration of vaccines, whooping cough, which was once common among American children in earlier years, had been controlled to the point of becoming quite rare.
However, the highly contagious whooping cough has never completely disappeared in the U.S., and this year has seen a surge in cases, resulting in the worst outbreak in half a century.
Statistics from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that, as of now, there have been 18,000 cases nationwide in 2012—double the number from the same period in 2011—with nine deaths reported this year.
To ensure their children's health, parents should make sure their kids receive all five doses of the whooping cough vaccine on schedule.
The CDC recommends that the first dose of the whooping cough vaccine be administered at two months of age, with the fifth dose given between ages four and six. An additional booster shot can also be administered at ages 11 or 12.
Additionally, adults who frequently interact with children should also receive a whooping cough booster to avoid transmitting the disease to young children.
