Since the winter outbreak of influenza in 2008-2009, Canadian researchers observed in the initial weeks that those who had received the flu vaccine appeared more vulnerable and susceptible to the virus compared to those who had not. Recent findings seem to reaffirm this possibility.
At the time, five studies from several Canadian provinces all yielded the same puzzling and troubling results. However, researchers from other countries initially dismissed the findings, labeling it merely a "Canadian problem."
Yet, the latest research suggests that the earlier Canadian findings may indeed hold true. Canadian scientists conducted experiments on ferrets, considered the best animal model for predicting how influenza affects humans. On the 9th, they presented their findings at the ICAAC, a major international infectious disease conference in San Francisco.
During a live-streamed press conference, Dr. Danuta Skowronski, an expert at the Vancouver Disease Control Center and lead author of the study, explained that she and her team tested 32 ferrets. Half were given the 2008 seasonal flu vaccine, while the other half received a placebo. The researchers were unaware of which ferrets received the vaccine. All 32 were then infected with the H1N1 virus.
The results showed that the vaccinated ferrets became noticeably weaker and sicker, though all eventually recovered.
Skowronski noted that these findings align with observations of increased risk in humans. However, the reason behind this side effect remains unclear. She urged other research institutions to prioritize investigating this issue, as understanding the cause is crucial for better preparing for future influenza outbreaks.
