September 14, 2012 (Uho Health Network Reporter Tan Yongyong / Comprehensive Report)

The common yellow dried tofu actually has its yellow color dyed onto its surface. Some manufacturers illegally add industrial dye "Metanil Yellow" to dried tofu and salted fish to enhance brightness or prolong color retention. Metanil Yellow is primarily used for dyeing paper, soap, fur, paint, and leather and is not an approved food colorant. According to regulations, it is prohibited for use in food products. Products found to contain Metanil Yellow will be penalized under Article 11, Paragraph 3 of the Food Sanitation Management Act, with fines ranging from 60,000 to 6 million NTD for the manufacturers. Research indicates that Metanil Yellow can cause liver cell damage, promote liver cancer, and is a carcinogen, posing serious health risks. Consumers cannot identify its presence visually.

To ensure consumers can purchase and consume food safely, the Changhua County Health Bureau is providing free DIY testing kits for public use. Starting today, these kits can be obtained at the Health Bureau’s service counter. Instructions on the package specify: Cut a small piece of the outer layer of uncooked dried tofu or yellow-colored salted fish and place it on white paper. Apply 1-2 drops of the "Metanil Yellow Rapid Test Reagent" to the colored area. If the sample turns purple-red, it may contain the illegal dye. If abnormal results are detected, consumers are advised not to panic but to contact the Health Bureau’s Food Hygiene Division and provide details of the purchase location and manufacturer. The Health Bureau will conduct follow-up inspections and, if confirmed, penalize the offending manufacturers under the Food Sanitation Management Act and recall non-compliant products to ensure food safety.

Consumers are urged to avoid purchasing overly brightly colored food to prevent ingesting excessive or illegal additives. Additionally, the "Metanil Yellow Rapid Test Reagent" is acidic and corrosive. It should be stored in a cool place, out of reach of children, to prevent misuse. Avoid direct contact with the reagent. In case of accidental ingestion or discomfort due to exposure, seek medical attention immediately.
