A study released in France today found that mice fed lifelong diets of genetically modified corn from Monsanto or exposed to the company's best-selling herbicide Roundup developed tumors and multiple organ damage. The French government has requested health regulators to investigate.

Although the lead researcher of this study has a record of criticizing the biotech industry, prompting other experts to remain cautious and refrain from jumping to conclusions, the findings are expected to reignite debate over the safety of genetically modified crops.

Monsanto could not be reached for immediate comment, but the company has consistently maintained that its products are safe and that there is no credible evidence linking the consumption of GMOs to any health risks in humans or animals.

The results are likely to cause an uproar in France, where opposition to GMOs is strong and the cultivation of such crops is banned.

Before the study was published in the journal *Food and Chemical Toxicology* and presented in London, the French research team unusually did not allow journalists to seek external opinions on the findings in advance.

Gilles-Eric Seralini of the University of Caen and his colleagues reported that mice fed a diet containing NK603—a seed variant resistant to Roundup—or given water containing the herbicide at levels permitted in the U.S. died earlier than those on a standard diet.

The study showed that animals consuming genetically modified food developed mammary tumors and severe liver and kidney damage.

Researchers noted that among the mice fed GMOs, 50% of males and 70% of females died prematurely, compared to only 30% of males and 20% of females in the control group.

However, the *Daily Mail* reported that some scientists have raised doubts about the study.

Alan Boobis, a professor of biochemical pharmacology at Imperial College London, said, "The way some of the results are presented makes it difficult to assess their significance."

Boobis added, "For example, the study does not appear to include a statistical analysis of mammary tumors."

He also pointed out, "The incidence of mammary tumors was high in untreated animals."

French Agriculture Minister Stephane Le Foll, Environment Minister Delphine Batho, and Health and Social Affairs Minister Marisol Touraine issued a joint statement announcing that they had requested the National Agency for Food Safety, Environment, and Labor (ANSES) to investigate the findings.
