October 3, 2012, China Times [Reported by Huang Xiao-Pei in Hsinchu City]

The Hsinchu City Health Bureau announced last night the results of tests on meatball products from twelve vendors, with two well-known brands failing the inspection. Chuang’s Meatballs were found to contain chloramphenicol at 0.0025 ppm, a substance that should not be detectable, while Hai Jui Meatballs were found to exceed the allowable residue limit for sulfonamide antibiotics (sulfamethazine) at 0.101 ppm, surpassing the standard of 0.100 ppm. The Health Bureau has ordered both companies to remove the problematic products from shelves.

The Hsinchu City Health Bureau’s investigation revealed that the meat used by Chuang’s Meatballs was supplied by Rong He Trading in Hsinchu County, while Hai Jui Meatballs sourced its meat from Tai Yi Food Company in Yunlin County. Authorities have notified the agricultural and health departments in both regions to investigate potential drug residue issues in the upstream pig farming industry. Penalties will also be imposed on the two counties.

Medical research indicates that long-term and excessive consumption of food containing chloramphenicol and sulfonamide antibiotics can place a heavy burden on the liver and kidneys, potentially leading to aplastic anemia and blood disorders in severe cases.

Wang Shi-Qun, the factory manager of Hai Jui Meatballs, criticized: "Downstream food businesses purchase meat from certified markets, yet the tests still show excessive residues. The Council of Agriculture failed in its oversight, leaving downstream businesses to bear the risks."

Chuang Pei-Yao, the owner of Chuang’s Meatballs, also expressed frustration, stating that the pork and lard supplied by Rong He Trading met CAS standards. "How could there still be chloramphenicol residues? We’re just meatball producers buying certified pork, yet we’re the ones penalized for failing tests. How are we supposed to keep operating?"
