When a baby is hungry, the mother quickly prepares formula milk. However, the latest domestic research has found that infants who consume formula milk face twice the risk of Salmonella infection compared to breastfed babies, due to potential contamination during the preparation process.
The research team collected data from nearly 1,000 children under the age of five hospitalized for gastroenteritis at three hospitals: Linkou Chang Gung, Kaohsiung Chang Gung, and Changhua Christian Hospital. The results showed that a quarter of the hospitalized children were primarily infected with Salmonella. Doctors explained that Salmonella is a Gram-negative bacillus transmitted mainly through the fecal-oral route. Clinical symptoms include fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and in severe cases, dehydration, septicemia, meningitis, and even an increased risk of death.
However, since Salmonella cannot survive high temperatures and is killed at over 70°C, doctors recommend that parents always use boiled water to prepare formula milk and sterilize bottles at high temperatures. The best preventive measure, though, is breastfeeding, which can significantly reduce the risk of infection.
